BMI was developed by Adolphe Quetelet during the 19th century. Through the calculation of BMI, you will know your weight category, which can be underweight, ideal, overweight, or even obese.
This calculation method can also serve as a screening tool to assess certain health risks. According to the WHO, abnormal or non-ideal BMI results increase the risk of several diseases.
How to Calculate BMI
BMI = Weight (kg) / (Height (m))²
WHO Asia Pacific BMI Classification:
Underweight = BMI < 18.5
Normal weight = BMI 18.5 – 22.99
Overweight = BMI 23.00 – 24.99
Obesity = BMI ≥ 25
Weaknesses of BMI
Because this calculation method only includes weight and height, without considering age, muscle mass, gender, and body fat, this way of calculating BMI is not effective when applied to pregnant women or athletes.
