Coronary Heart Disease

Coronary heart disease is a type of heart condition where the blood vessels of the heart cannot deliver enough oxygen-rich blood to the heart.

Causes of Coronary Heart Disease
Research has shown that several factors can trigger coronary heart disease, such as:

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol and triglycerides
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Smoking habits
  • Inflammation in blood vessels
  • Symptoms of Coronary Heart Disease

 

Symptoms caused by coronary heart disease include:

  • Chest pain or discomfort radiating to the neck, jaw, left shoulder and arm, back, or left side of the abdomen (often mistaken for gastritis).
  • Cold sweats, nausea, vomiting, or fatigue.
  • Irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias), which can even lead to cardiac arrest (sudden cardiac arrest). If not treated promptly, this can result in death.

Prevention of Coronary Heart Disease
Here are some helpful tips to prevent coronary heart disease:

  1. Healthy Diet
    Avoid fried foods and opt for meals that are sautéed, boiled, or steamed. Also, avoid foods high in cholesterol and fat, such as seafood. Limit foods high in sugar, such as soft drinks.
  2. Quit Smoking
    Everyone knows smoking negatively affects heart health. Stop smoking immediately to keep your heart healthy.
  3. Avoid Stress
    When stressed, the brain signals the body to release cortisol to cope. However, excessive production of this hormone can cause blood vessels to stiffen.
  4. Avoid Hypertension
    High blood pressure can contribute to heart disease by damaging arterial walls and allowing LDL cholesterol to enter, increasing plaque buildup.
  5. Maintain a Healthy Weight
    Avoid overeating to prevent obesity. People with a waist circumference of more than 80 cm have a higher risk of coronary heart disease.
  6. Exercise Regularly
    Engage in cardio activities such as jogging, walking, swimming, or cycling. These exercises strengthen heart muscles and improve blood circulation.
  7. Consume Antioxidants
    Make sure to eat antioxidant-rich foods to combat free radicals in the body.
