Maintaining Kidney Health
The kidneys are one of the vital organs with an important role in the human body, one of which is filtering blood. Therefore, maintaining kidney health is essential to ensure their function in the body remains optimal.
Here are some ways to maintain kidney health:
- Consuming Healthy and Nutritious Foods
Since the kidneys function to filter blood, health problems in these organs are often caused by diseases related to blood and blood vessels, such as diabetes and high blood pressure (hypertension). You can consume a balanced diet. Increasing your intake of fruits and vegetables can also help maintain kidney health. Additionally, you can choose kidney-friendly foods that contain balanced ion levels.
- Drinking Enough Water
Water helps in the excretion process of toxins in the kidneys, which are eliminated through urine. Therefore, drinking sufficient water can ease the kidneys' workload in producing urine. It is recommended to drink at least 2 liters of water daily.
- Maintaining Stable Blood Pressure
High blood pressure is one of the factors that can lead to kidney health issues. You can maintain stable blood pressure by getting enough sleep, limiting salt intake to no more than 2,000 milligrams or about one teaspoon per day, managing stress, and so on
- Quitting Smoking and Avoiding Excessive Alcohol Consumption
Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can raise blood pressure and negatively affect kidney health. Cigarettes also contain toxic substances that can hinder blood circulation. When blood circulation is disrupted, the kidneys must work harder to filter it.
- Following a Diet to Maintain a Healthy Weight
Another way to maintain kidney health is by following a healthy diet to keep your weight within an ideal range. This diet helps prevent obesity, which forces the kidneys to work harder to filter out food toxins.
- Taking Medications and Supplements as Prescribed by a Doctor
Monitoring medication and supplement consumption according to a doctor's prescription is another way to maintain kidney health. Overusing medications without medical advice can damage organs, including the kidneys.
- Exercising Regularly
Regular exercise is an easy way to maintain kidney health. It helps improve blood circulation, allowing the kidneys to filter blood optimally. Additionally, exercise can help maintain stable blood pressure and body weight, which are closely linked to kidney health.
