Thalassemia

Thalassemia is a blood disorder caused by a lack of normal hemoglobin (Hb) in red blood cells. This condition leads to anemia or low blood levels in those affected.

Thalassemia: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
Thalassemia occurs due to an inherited genetic disorder, meaning it can develop as early as childhood. The initial symptoms typically resemble those of anemia, such as fatigue, drowsiness, and shortness of breath.

Causes and Symptoms of Thalassemia
Thalassemia is caused by a genetic abnormality that affects red blood cell production. People with thalassemia often experience anemia, leading to symptoms such as fatigue and weakness. These symptoms generally appear within the first two years of life. The onset and severity of symptoms depend on the type of thalassemia a person has.

Treatment and Prevention of Thalassemia
Thalassemia is a lifelong condition that requires ongoing care. Patients with thalassemia need regular blood transfusions to replenish the deficient red blood cells. For severe cases, doctors may recommend a bone marrow transplant.

Unfortunately, thalassemia cannot be prevented as it is inherited genetically. For couples who carry the thalassemia gene, doctors may suggest in vitro fertilization (IVF) to prevent passing the condition to their children.
