Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate

The Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) is a condition that measures how quickly erythrocytes (red blood cells) settle.

A high sedimentation rate is one of many signs that the body is experiencing inflammation. However, the sedimentation rate test should not be the sole reference for diagnosis. In general, the sedimentation rate in women is much higher compared to men.

 

Causes of High Sedimentation Rate
Several factors can cause an elevated sedimentation rate. These include systemic and local inflammation and infections, tissue injury or ischemia (lack of blood supply to tissues), cancer, anemia, diabetes, heart disease, blood vessel inflammation (vasculitis), obesity, and thyroid disorders.
High sedimentation rate results can also indicate autoimmune diseases such as lupus, bone infections, rheumatic fever, skin infections, systemic infections, and tuberculosis (TB).

 

What to Do When You Have a High Sedimentation Rate
Here are some steps you can take to address a high sedimentation rate:

  • Exercise regularly
    Research shows that intense exercise can lower the sedimentation rate. Exercise is also an effective way to lose weight.
  • Avoid foods high in sugar
    Foods that can lower the sedimentation rate include those rich in vitamin C, fish oil, and vitamin E. You can find these nutrients in fruits and vegetables.
  • Take prescribed medications as needed
    Based on the elevated sedimentation rate, doctors typically prescribe medication according to your condition. Make sure to follow the prescribed dosage.
