The Omicron variant was first detected in South Africa. Quoting the covid19.go.id page, Omicron has been detected in several countries since it was first discovered on the African continent. This variant is said to be one that transmits the virus very quickly. The World Health Organization (WHO) stated that the B.1.1.529 or Omicron variant was first reported to WHO from South Africa on November 24 2021.
