Is Black Coffee Safe for the Stomach?

For some people, this type of coffee can trigger an increase in stomach acid and raise the risk of inflammation in the stomach lining. If that's the case, is it true that people with acid reflux disease should completely avoid drinking coffee?

Caffeine in coffee can cause relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter muscle. As a result, stomach acid may flow back into the esophagus, which is a key sign of GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease). Decaf coffee or coffee with low or even no caffeine content can still stimulate acid production. This explains why drinking coffee on an empty stomach can increase acid levels in the stomach. One of the symptoms is heartburn, a burning sensation in the throat or chest caused by stomach acid rising into the esophagus.

Coffee Options for Acid Reflux Sufferers:

  • Dark roast coffee
  • Cold brew coffee, which extracts less acid, making it more suitable for GERD sufferers
  • Decaf coffee, which contains less caffeine compared to regular coffee
  • Coffee served with added milk
  • Other options include latte, as it uses very dark roast coffee beans combined with milk

Effects of Excessive Caffeine Consumption:

  • Urinary incontinence
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Higher risk of gout
  • Menstrual issues
  • Insomnia or difficulty sleeping
  • Memory problems
  • Bone damage
  • Cardiovascular problems
  • Increased cortisol levels
