Low Purine Diet (Uric Acid)

Foods high in purine content are types of foods that should be avoided by individuals with gout. This is because such foods can trigger an increase in uric acid levels, leading to the onset of symptoms.

Therefore, to reduce the risk of increased uric acid levels, try implementing a low-purine diet. Purine is a compound that can naturally be found in some types of food. However, the levels of purine can vary, with some foods having high levels and others having low levels. The purine content in food plays a role in triggering excess uric acid.

Uric acid is created when the body breaks down purine from the food consumed. One of the symptoms is pain around the joints. People with gout should avoid foods such as red meat, organ meats, and alcoholic beverages. Foods that are sweet and high in sugar should also be avoided to reduce the risk of gout.

There are several types of food that can be included in a low-purine diet, including:

  1. Water
Drinking water is known to help maintain the body’s health. Meeting the body's water intake needs can help keep the body hydrated and assist the kidneys in removing uric acid from the bloodstream.

  2. Low-fat Dairy Products
People with gout can still enjoy low-fat or fat-free dairy products, such as milk, cheese, and yogurt.

  3. Grains
A low-purine diet also includes consuming grains and starches such as bread, pasta, rice, and potatoes.

  4. Fruits and Vegetables
Consuming fruits and vegetables helps maintain overall body health. These foods are also good for people with gout.
