Monkeypox (mpox)

Monkeypox is a disease caused by a virus that is transmitted through animals (zoonosis).

Monkeypox is a disease caused by a virus infection from a group similar to smallpox. Monkeypox is a contagious disease and transmission can occur through animals and humans.

 

How monkeypox is transmitted :

  1. Direct contact with infected animals or confirmed monkeypox patients
  2. Consuming contaminated wild animal meat (bush meat)
  3. Placental transmission from mother to fetus
  4. Droplets

 

Symptoms of monkeypox :

  1. Headache
  2. Acute fever >38.5 C
  3. Lymphadenopathy (enlarged lymph nodes)
  4. Muscle ache
  5. Back pain
  6. Asthenia (body weakness)
  7. Rash on the skin

 

How to prevent monkeypox :

  1. Avoid skin contact with symptomatic people
  2. Do not touch the patient's rash or scabs
  3. Wash hands with water and soap
  4. Do not share eating and drinking utensils with patients
  5. Do not kiss, hug, or have sex with the patient
  6. Avoid contact with host animals, including rodents and dead/sick primates
