Relieving Gout in the Feet

Gout is a condition that causes pain and swelling in the joints of the body.

This condition is caused by high levels of uric acid in the body, which then accumulates in the joints. Uric acid often affects the feet, particularly the joints of the big toe, ankles, or knees. Some of the symptoms include severe joint pain, discomfort in the joints lasting several days, swelling and redness, and difficulty moving the joints normally.

Ways to Relieve Gout in the Feet:

  1. Take Medications
There are two types of gout medications: drugs to relieve pain and drugs to control uric acid levels to prevent further attacks. Pain-relieving medications include NSAIDs, analgesics, corticosteroids, and colchicine. Meanwhile, medications to reduce uric acid levels include allopurinol (Zyloprim), febuxostat (Uloric), pegloticase (Krystexxa), and anakinra (Kineret).

  2. Adopt a Healthy Lifestyle
Gout sufferers need to be mindful when choosing their food. Uric acid is produced when the body breaks down purines. In other words, avoid foods high in purines, such as red meat, seafood, and alcohol, to lower uric acid levels in the blood.
In addition to diet, maintaining an ideal body weight is essential. Staying active and managing weight can also help manage gout. Exercise and weight loss can reduce uric acid levels and relieve pressure on the joints.

  3. Practice Pain Relief Techniques
In addition to taking pain-relief medications, you can also reduce discomfort by trying the following methods:
    - Cold compress: Wrap ice in a cloth and place it on the joint to ease the pain.
    - Use assistive devices: For example, a walking cane to reduce the strain on painful joints during daily activities.
    - Minimize pressure on the affected joint: If in public, remove your shoes to relieve pressure on your feet.
    - Elevate your feet: While lying or sitting, position your feet higher than your chest.

  4. Maintain Good Self-Care
Gout is a condition that can come and go unexpectedly, which can be exhausting both physically and mentally. Therefore, it’s crucial to take care of yourself, whether you’re experiencing a gout attack or not. Some steps include practicing relaxation to maintain mental health and pacing your movements if you feel an attack coming. Additionally, protect your joints from injury by engaging in activities that don’t put pressure on them.

  5. Surgical Options
Sometimes, surgery is necessary to repair damage caused by gout. The types of surgery include:
    - Tophi removal: Tophi are uric acid crystal lumps that can appear in joints, becoming inflamed and potentially infected. Surgery may be recommended to reduce the risk of complications.
    - Uric acid crystal removal: If gout causes severe pain, surgery to remove uric acid crystals can be an effective option to relieve discomfort.
    - Joint replacement surgery: This involves removing the damaged joint caused by gout and replacing it with a prosthesis (artificial body part) to facilitate movement and reduce pain.
