Sleep Hygiene

Sleep hygiene is a series of activities carried out to improve sleep quality. These activities are typically done to address sleep issues such as insomnia or obstructive sleep apnea.

How to Implement Sleep Hygiene
It’s actually quite simple and not too difficult to do. However, consistency is key. Here are the ways to practice sleep hygiene:

  1. Ensure Consistent Sleep and Wake Times
    Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends. This habit helps you establish a consistent sleep rhythm.

  2. Create a Pre-Bedtime Routine
    Establishing a bedtime routine can help you fall asleep faster. You can pamper yourself with a warm bath, brush your teeth, or apply skincare. You can also engage in activities you enjoy, such as stretching, meditating, listening to music, reading a book, or journaling. Avoid activities that might trigger emotions or worries, like work or study-related tasks.

  3. Create a Comfortable Sleeping Environment
    To sleep faster, make your bedroom an ideal place for rest. Turn off the lights or use a dim night light, and set the room temperature to be cool. Use earplugs if your surroundings are too noisy.

  4. Limit Nap Time
    Avoid taking long naps, as they may make it harder for you to sleep at night. Limit your nap time to a maximum of 30 minutes, and take it before the afternoon.

  5. Avoid Eating and Drinking Before Bedtime
    Refrain from eating heavy, spicy, or large meals before bed. Lying down right after eating can increase stomach pressure, causing food and stomach acid to rise into the esophagus, making you uncomfortable and disrupting your sleep. Also, avoid consuming caffeine and alcohol before bedtime. These beverages can keep you awake and make it hard to fall asleep. Additionally, it’s recommended to avoid smoking before bed, as the nicotine effects can make it harder to feel sleepy.

 

These are the steps you can follow to practice sleep hygiene. In addition to addressing sleep difficulties, this pattern can also enhance your productivity during the day and positively impact your overall physical and mental health.
