Sore Throat: Symptom or Disease?

A sore throat often becomes an early symptom of health problems in the body.

In some cases, a sore throat can be a common issue that can heal without serious treatment within a few days.

A sore throat can be caused by viruses or bacteria. However, a sore throat can also be caused by external factors such as cigarette smoke, pollution, irritants, allergies, and weather conditions.

How to Differentiate a Common Sore Throat from Other Diseases:

  1. Common Sore Throat
The cause of a common sore throat is the influenza virus. A common sore throat is usually accompanied by a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, and body aches. It usually improves within 1-2 days and does not last more than 2 weeks, whether with medication or self-care.
  2. Allergic Sore Throat
Caused by exposure to allergens such as dust or dry weather. If the sore throat is accompanied by symptoms such as itchy or watery eyes, a scratchy throat, or a swollen mouth, it could indicate allergy symptoms.
  3. Sore Throat Due to Inflammation (Tonsillitis)
Tonsillitis or inflamed tonsils is a condition where the tonsils become inflamed. The tonsils also appear more swollen and red than usual and are accompanied by difficulty swallowing.
  4. Sore Throat Due to Bacterial Infection (Strep Throat)
A sore throat caused by a bacterial infection is also known as a Streptococcus infection. The sore throat from this bacteria occurs quickly and suddenly, and more often affects children than adults. It can last longer. Other symptoms that may be experienced include swollen tonsils with red spots inside the mouth, fever, chills, and difficulty breathing/swallowing. To treat it, you are advised to see a doctor.
  5. Sore Throat Due to Coronavirus
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a sore throat is one of the symptoms of Covid-19. It is important to note that the most common symptoms of coronavirus are fever, dry cough, fatigue, and loss of smell.

In any case of a sore throat, you are advised to drink plenty of water and get enough rest while monitoring symptom development to identify the cause. A sore throat needs to be treated according to its cause. Therefore, if the sore throat persists, consult a doctor immediately.
