Normally, the pressure has a range between 10 - 20 mmHg. This pressure functions to stabilize the shape of the eye, supply nutrients, and refract light so that the eye can see.
Fasting during Ramadan has a direct effect on eye health. A study explains that fasting during Ramadan is related to an increase in intraocular pressure (IOP) in the morning, both in healthy individuals and those with eye disorders. This is linked to fluid and food intake during sahur.
Therefore, individuals with IOP disorders (such as glaucoma) are advised to limit fluid intake during sahur to prevent an increase in IOP and should still consult with a doctor before fasting during Ramadan.
Fasting also plays a role in reducing tear function due to changes in food intake portions, so during sahur and iftar, it is recommended to consume foods rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, protein, zinc, and potassium to stabilize tear function and levels.
