Styes and Chalazion

A stye is a condition where a small lump appears on the eyelid. However, this condition could be a chalazion. What is the difference?

Difference between Stye and Chalazion
These two lumps on the eyelids feel quite uncomfortable. Styes occur due to bacterial infections in the hair follicles or in the oil-producing glands in the eyelids. The eyes may also feel sore, sore and itchy.

Meanwhile, chalazion is not caused by infection. Chalazion occurs because the oil glands are blocked, causing swelling. Chalazion usually does not cause pain.

Differences in Symptoms of Stye and Chalazion
Stye

1. Very painful red bumps along the edge of the eyelid at the base of the eyelashes. This can make the entire eyelid swell
2. Usually there is a small dot in the center of the lump
3. It felt like something was blocking my eyes
4. Eyes feel itchy
5. There is a crust along the edge of the eyelid

Chalazion

1. Lumps on the eyelids that sometimes make the eyes red and swollen
2. Feels supple or soft to the touch
3. In rare cases, the eyelid may swell completely
4. An enlarged chalazion can press on the eyeball and cause blurry vision

How to Treat Styes and Chalazions?

1. Warm Water Compress. You can use a flannel cloth or a clean small towel soaked in warm water. After that, you can gently compress it on your eyelids for 5 to 10 minutes. You can do this regularly 3 to 4 times a day
2. Massage. You can do a gentle massage on the lump after compressing it with warm water. However, make sure your hands are clean before massaging
3. Clean Eyelids. Clean at least 2 times a day to remove oil and dead skin cells that cause fluid to form inside the bumps.

Apart from that, there are several things that should be paid attention to during the treatment process, namely:

1. Always use a clean cloth or cotton wool when cleaning the eye area
2. Never squeeze or try to squeeze the eye
3. Keep your face, scalp, eyebrows and hands clean
4. Limit the use of make up on the area
5. If you wear contact lenses, make sure they are clean
6. Always wash your hands before and after touching the infected area
7. Tell your doctor if you feel any abnormalities or symptoms do not improve when you use eye drops or oral medication prescribed by your doctor
8. Call your doctor if there is no change after 2 weeks of treatment
